www.facebook.com
Facebook is a great social networking tool that has helped shaped our communication and socialization. This tool allows people to connect remotely and form groups, communities and interests through a multitude of ways. This rekindles our society's movement from nomads to civilizations. Civilizations allowed people to form relationships, communities and connect with people that had similar interests. The need for humans to connect with one another is an inherent need and building communities helps to fulfill that need. As our needs continue to diversify, a large network of community members is needed to meet those needs. Facebook has allowed people to do that on a much grander scale. I am an avid facebooker and I am not sure that I would be as involved in causes, distant friend's lives and community projects and news.
Kat,
ReplyDeleteGreat connections to our primal social needs. The only problem I have with facebook is the impersonal nature of not actually seeing the person your talking with to get their mannerisms, facial expressions, etc.
My feelings aside, you're right, there are a lot more people I stay in touch with that I probably wouldn't otherwise. It is within our nature to want to stay connected to the people we know and maintain our social vitality based on the number of "friends" we have.
We all seem to be on the same historical path with communications, whether facebook, tablets, or data storage. I think Bob Streff posed an interesting question that I am passing on to you. Do you agree with Kelley's ONE machine future?
ReplyDeleteKat,
ReplyDeleteI agree 100%. The power of Facebook cannot be ignored. Although it has had many negative impacts in education (organization and/or instigation of conflict in school), the ability to bring people together for causes is amazing.
One great example was with our high school's auto shop contest. Students, teachers, administrators utilized the social networks facebook and twitter to get out the vote to win $25,000.
Many of us who are unable to get together to communicate can through these resources and can spread information through these venues.
